Tanja van Biljon teaching Visual Arts at Bud & Blossom Creatives Germiston - where expressions take flight

Where Expressions Take Flight – The Bud & Blossom Story

Every creative journey has a beginning. For Bud & Blossom ‘Creatives’, it started with a simple but powerful observation: too many learners were losing their creative spark – not because they lacked talent, but because they lacked the right environment.

What began as a vision has grown into a dedicated Visual Arts school in Germiston, Johannesburg, serving learners of all ages – from primary school children discovering art for the first time to matric students preparing for national examinations and adults reconnecting with their creative voice.

This is the story of how it all came together.

How It All Started

Tanja van Biljon’s relationship with art began long before the studio doors opened. With a Fine Arts Honours degree from the University of Pretoria and over 20 years of teaching experience, she spent decades watching creativity transform lives – building confidence in quiet learners, giving voice to those who struggled with words, and opening doors to careers and opportunities that many parents never expected.

But she also saw the opposite. She saw learners who were told art wasn’t “serious enough.” She watched talented young people abandon their creative instincts because no one took the time to nurture them properly.

That’s when the idea for Bud & Blossom took root.

Not just another art class – but a structured, intentional creative space where learners could develop real skill, academic rigour, and personal expression, all at the same time.

More Than a Classroom – A Creative Home

From day one, Bud & Blossom was designed to feel different.

Small groups ensure that every learner is seen and supported – not lost in a crowd. The studio environment is calm, structured, and inspiring, with natural light and real artwork surrounding every workspace. Creativity here is treated with the same seriousness as any academic subject, because that’s exactly what it deserves.

The approach is inclusive by design. Learners with special education needs (LSEN) and neurodivergent individuals are welcomed and supported through adapted pacing, individual attention, and a teaching philosophy that meets every learner where they are.

As one of our alumni, Gabriella Janse Van Rensburg, described it: “We were an art family that supported each other.”

That sense of belonging – of being part of something meaningful – is at the heart of everything we do.

What We Believe

From Studio to Shop – Art That Lives With You

Over time, Tanja’s original artworks began to evolve beyond the canvas. What started as studio paintings became the foundation for a curated collection of limited edition art décor – scatter pillows, placemats, and tote bags, each crafted to order from her original work.

Every product carries the same philosophy as the classroom: art should be lived with, not just admired from a distance.

Tanja’s artistic language – what she calls the “Rainbow Renaissance” – celebrates South Africa’s heritage, beauty, and hope. It’s visible in every brushstroke and every product that leaves the studio.

For those who want to explore Tanja’s fine art portfolio, her dedicated artist website offers a deeper look into her creative world at tanjart.co.za.
